The Shape of Water is an allegorical look at color v.s blank canvas, weird vs the norm, and special vs mundane. The film shows the comfort and wonder of feeling at home, and finding love with someone like you. Guillermo Del Toro has been making movies for a long while now. He hasn’t gotten as much love from the academy as he should have, but it’s all changed with this film. Often described as hauntingly beautiful, The Shape of Water is the best love story of the year, and it’s about a fish and mute lady. The use of Colour, the use of song and dance, and the overall fairy-tale esque narrative make The Shape of Water a joy to watch, but also a fantastic study in film and visual literature. The film is a poem, and Guillermo Del Toro crafts one of the best fairy tales ever made, with endearing characters and incredible production design.
