Spike Lee has made his illustrious return to powerful film-making with what might be his best picture since 1989's 'Do The Right Thing', and its name is 'BlacKkKlansman'. John David Washington stars in the vehicle that hopefully leads to his massive popularity, and knocks it out of the park with an Oscar worthy performance. He's aided by Adam Driver who also gives an Academy Award caliber performance, portraying a character that has to forgo his personal identity for an investigation that directly attacks his kind. Spike Lee explores the past yes, but the strength of the movie is in the parallels that it draws with the present day, and how frightening it is that these injustices are ongoing, despite 40 years separating the time periods. The soundtrack is incredible, the tension is palpable, the script is funny and genuine, but its message and content are topical and thoroughly rocking to the core.
