Is there a magic trick that can give me two hours of my life back? No?

NOW YOU SEE ME 2 is the sequel that nobody asked for but I decided it deserved a chance just like any other unwarranted sequel. NYSM2 is definitely a sequel that shouldn't have happened.

With its cartoonish characters, one can't help but wonder why these fine actors decided to play the cartoon version of the characters they played in the first installment. Mark Ruffalo was the only one who tried to give his character any sense of realism. I will say, however, that it's always fun to see Lizzy Caplan on screen. But whatever fun I was having there quickly faded since her character proved to be nothing more than a one-trick-pony.

As far as plot, it's a pretty straight-forward one. However, they tried so hard to throw in lots of tricks and surprises that I couldn't care less about by the time the forced reveals appeared on screen. Every twist and turn was forced and came off as the the filmmakers were trying desperately to make them awe-inspiring but came up flat.

I suppose we can't expect too much from the director of such duds as JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS and GI JOE: RETALIATION.

Skip this one. No need to ever see it. Only reason I'm giving it three stars is because there were some moments where I thought "well that was cool." But those were too few and far in-between.
