Ad Astra is James Gray’s most recent masterpiece, combining the timeless story beats of Joesph Conrad with his signature melancholic and methodical intricacies. The film boasts a decidedly serious tone and a hefty thematic purpose, choosing to take on the realities of toxic masculinity, the incessant desire for infinite knowledge and the concept of the sins of the father being passed down to the son. Ad Astra is the most powerful picture I’ve seen all year. James Gray had his finger firmly on the pulse for this riveting, melancholic and emotionally resonant feature, and I hope to see more films like it in the future.
