Chico and Rita has a vibrant animation which vibrates like the strings on a double bass. The films bebop jazz score keeps the pace up and the story is compelling. Sadly, I didn't buy the central relationship. All the film needed was one short montage of Chico and Rita together and happy. Apart from the night they first meet, every other time they see each other in the film, Chico is a colossal dick. Rita was much more compelling, with a real divide between her career and Chico, much like in LaLa Land. Chico just seemed selfish and grumpy.
Nevertheless, the film's ending will make anyone tear up in Pixar fashion and the film's visuals give it a big boost. While this doesn't quite push the boat out like La La Land did, it's clearly made with equal affections.0 member like this review.
