La Haine is an immortal tapestry of the underground - a solemn and stylish ode to the plight of the "have-nots". As a black man, I know what it's like to fear and have strong contempt for the police, and the day after a riot is no exception. The three main performances burst with passion, their personalities exploding on screen like the aftermath of a ticking time-bomb; as a result, this thinly plotted story is able to express itself through character, and heavy underlying imagery. The philosophy of the film is never pretentious, and it's message never didactic; ultimately, at it's fantastic end we are fully immersed in this world of chaos, no answers, no true resolution - completely left to our own devices.
