In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant ar...
Logan, you still have time.”
Says an aged professor Charles Xavier to his former student and current caretaker, the Wolverine. Logan is a one of a kind film, filled with the perfect blend of emotion, action, heart and drama. Logan is now one few films I consider masterpieces. If Logan does not top my favorites of 2017, I’ll be damned.
Logan earns its R rating with the first words, and the scene that follows it. It gives us the definitive wolverine within 5 minutes of its run-time, and really, that’s all any superhero fan could’ve ask for. The cursing in the film doesn’t feel forced, and any time a character utters a swear word, it feels organic and beneficial to the realism the film strives for. The action in the film is flat-out stupendous, and quite possibly the best action in any superhero film , with wolverine being able to slash and tear through whomever he pleases in a cold-blooded rage of fury.
James Mangold directed 2013’s The Wolverine, which was a decent film at best, but Mangold rises to the occasion for this swansong and delivers a beautifully directed and magnificently envisioned tale of a father and his daughter. The acting directed by Mangold is quite possibly the best performances the leading three actors have, and will ever give in their acting careers. Patrick Stewart in my opinion, needs to be recognized for his performance in this film, as his portrayal of a mentally damaged professor X almost brought my eyes to tears. Hugh Jackman brings something new to this film that wasn’t present in the other X-men films he has starred in, and that is experience and perspective. Hugh Jackman’s performance could have been stale, due to the longevity of his turn as the titular character, but instead his performance was layered, nuanced and passionate. The breakout star Dafne Keene is just dazzling. For not talking for half of the movie, she sure gave an astounding performance. I see incredibly bright things in her future considering the magnitude of talent she displayed in this picture.
The Narrative is tightly woven, leaving very little loose ends and making us fall in love with each and every passing scene. The best scenes in the movie keep on being up-ended by another awe-inspiring one, until the last scene topples them all.
The emotion that this movie evoked from me is unlike any other film I’ve seen in a long while, and that is due to all the factors I’ve discussed here today. This film is a masterpiece of the genre, and will be remembered for its revolutionary take on the modern superhero film.
