  • WHAT I LIKED: 'The Book of Life,' is on the one hand a very snappy and engaging animation, but as much as anything it also feels like a kind of family arts and culture show as it beautifully brings to life the Mexican Day of the Dead festival for eyes of all ages to admire. This is thanks to a set of brilliantly creative visuals along with a properly inventive musical narrative, and in the end this makes for something that not only truly captures the imagination, but also keeps you thoroughly engaged from start to finish.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Perhaps the storytelling isn't as inventive or as successful as the visuals, as the third act does feel somewhat deflating.
VERDICT: A beautifully-crafted film with all the appeal of a carnival, 'The Book of Life,' is a properly dazzling and engaging example of the sheer power of animation.
