  • WHAT I LIKED: After Tarantino took a risk with 'Jackie Brown,' and things didn't go entirely to plan, he ran back to the flippancy of his first two projects, but in a picture that's virtually entirely about paying homage to the martial arts movies of his adolescence. This does make for some appealing action, an awesome soundtrack, and some references that will make you smile, and with the badass Uma Thurman at its centre, it does make for a pretty cool film to behold too.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Unfortunately though, the whole thing just lacks drive of its own as it doesn't have any of the wit or pace of Tarantino's original affairs, and relies too much on overblown action and references without any proper character development at all. In a way then, it's Tarantino style turned up to eleven but with most of the appeal stripped away, and in the end it's a fairly unengaging experience where each and every punch and slice has exponentially less impact than the last.
VERDICT: A real step-down from this director, 'Kill Bill,' is unmistakably Tarantino, but it's Tarantino with all of the smart wit and snappy pace gone, and none of the gritty sophistication we glimpsed in 'Jackie Brown,' either.
