  • WHAT I LIKED: 'How to Drain Your Dragon,' has a great story about an island of Vikings who hunt and kill dragons, and a young boy who goes against his elders to befriend the most dangerous one of all after he secretly shoots it down. It's a classic case of a character slowly finding his own voice in a world of tradition, and everyone else inevitably coming round to his ways after much rejection and difficulty. But it only transcends because the characters are so perfectly realised by the animation which brilliantly emphasises the physicality of both the men and the beasts. The Vikings are comically imposing and blinkered (something helped by the fact they're voiced by such a great collection of Scottish actors) whilst the boy is floppy and defeated, then increasingly determined and fascinated by his relationship with the frankly rather adorable dragon which is rather moving to behold in itself.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: For what it is, it's a hard film to fault.

VERDICT: A great character story with some genuine depth, 'How to Train Your Dragon,' is properly good family animation.
