  • WHAT I LIKED: Like most Coen Brothers movies, 'The Big Lebowski,' takes a potentially engaging story and populates it with idiots having ridiculous conversations about insignificant things. In fact, rather like 'Fargo,' it specifically involves a bunch of one-dimensional oddballs solving a seemingly complex kidnapping case, only here they're infuriating layabouts who can't be mistaken for anything other than the but of our laughter. Thanks to comedic performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman - as well as some clever writing from the Coens - that does occasionally elicit some smiles, and the fact we're not in the know does add a degree of anticipation to the plot reveals.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The Tarantino-esque character humour does get pretty grating after a while, and it ultimately undermines any serious engagement in the plot or its characters.

VERDICT: Another vaguely engaging mystery from the Coens full of ridiculous characters who elicit the odd smile, 'The Big Lebowski,' is nothing more than dumb, cult-classic fun.
