  • Rian Johnson's voice and style are well-suited for telling Star Wars stories, but if he wasn't interested in continuing the one JJ Abrams began then he should have been given a different project from the very beginning.

I'm repelled by the tonal shift in TLJ, and Johnson's failure to continue almost any of the intriguing threads JJ left him. More than that, it feels disrespectful the way he casually tosses so many storylines aside without adding much of his own in their place. I've been waiting two years for answers to TFA, whether it's Snoke's origin, Rey's parentage, Luke's exile, Ben Solo's fall, or the finding of Luke's old saber, Johnson ignores or junks all of that great story potential. To subvert various fan expectations is fine--and something Star Wars probably needs at this point--but when you subvert almost everything it's just negation.

Johnson had the unique opportunity to make an old Luke Skywalker film, something I think anyone who grew up with the original trilogy has always hoped for. Johnson had all the money in the world, talented young actors, and a promising first installment to build on--the idea that this film is the result of all those resources is appalling. Last Jedi is silly, irrelevant, and one of the worst films in the series.
