Having taken her first steps into a larger world in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the Star Wars saga.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is arguably my most anticipated movie of all time. So I say as ashameless die hard Star Wars fan that I was extremely excited for this, yet I also felt a feeling of trepidation on what I was about to see. However, after three viewing of the film I can gratefully say that I absolutely love and adore this film.
This movie is BOLD. Really bold, and really risky. This has left to some of my fellow fans more dissatisfied than me, and I respect their opinion. In fact, don't be fooled by my rating beacuse this film is not perfect, and one or two of the risks didnt't work for me. Most notably John Boyega's Finn, and Kelly Marie Tran's new character of Rose were great characters with good chemistry in my opinion, but their storyline didnt hit the sweet spot for me. A particular sequence in the second act took me out of the film for a second, and is probably my least favourite part of the trilogy so far. I must also say that there are moments in this film that I gave the benefit to, but I can understand why people may not feel the same as me on these issues.
However, aside from that this film is pretty much flawless to me. I absolutely love what Rian Johnson has done with my favourite characters, especially the main trio of this film Luke, Kylo, and Rey. I won't go into spoilers, but I absolutely loved Luke's character in this. Mark Hamill reprising his role as the definitive protagonist Luke Skywalker for the first time in 34 years would also be an emotional and almost controversial portrayal. However, I was thrilled, and awd by the progression of Luke's character, and how he's used in this film. I think Adam Driver's Kylo Ren is arguably alongside with Luke my favourite part of this movie. The performance and character arc was simply superb, and it's further evidence that he is my favourite villain of this decade. Daisy Ridley's Rey was alson fantasic, and her growth as a character is very interesting, and brilliantly handled too. One of my few issues with The Force Awakens is that Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameon wasn't used as much after the first act. However, he was my favourite side charctr in this film, and his character was may more fleshed out, and entertaining in my opinion. Carrie Fisher in this movie was great. It's hard to look past the reality of her death, but as Leia Organa she only managed to further endear herself to me in this film, and further integreate the character and the actress in my heart. I thought Andy Serkis' was great again as Snoke, and Domnhall Gleeson's General |Hux was really good also. Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro also had great characters that further enriched and expanded the Star Wars universe.
I've mentioned about how satisifed, and enthusiastic I am about what Rian Johnson has done with the script of this new fim, however I must mention that the direction of this film was also brilliant. As Johnson stunningly brought to life great sequences, and moments I never thought I'd see in Star Wars. Not to mention the great way in which he expanded the lore with new, and exciting planets. As always the score in this film was outstanding, and simply another masterclass by the legendary John Williams. He magnificiently manages to add new, great scores while marvellously mixing them with older, and more familiar scores( including a prequel one!). Not much I can say without getting into spoilers, so I'll end with me saying that I absolutely, whole heartedly loved this film. It's not without one or two rough spots, but it's a great star wars films, and one of the best for me. My favourite film of the year(probably mainly because it's Star Wars).
