  • WHAT I LIKED: There's no denying that there are some funny things in 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging,' as writer/director Gurinda Chadha takes the source material and crafts some amusing commentary on white-girl teenage angst and first-world problems in general. This makes for a rom-com that easily ticks the comedy box without too many Americanisms, and a film that winds up a fine way to while away a couple of hours to - especially if you're 14.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The trouble is that none of that stuff is remotely self-aware, and instead you get the sense that the film wants you to genuinely pity the characters. That could have worked of course (look no further than, say, the work of Richard Curtis for that kind of thing working perfectly), but the bottom line is that you never really get to care about these guys because the performances are hugely irritating and they get very little serious development to work with. In the end that means the film never gets beyond its comedic boundaries, and those walls can only really stretch so far.
VERDICT: An often funny but generally below-par rom-com where the teenage angst stuff feels insignificant because of how little you care for the characters, 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging,' may work for its target audience, but it certainly doesn't work much beyond it.
