Showgirls is a horrible movie, but I find it fascinating because it’s so close to being genius. It’s like each scene is an exercise to pick apart and see how it could have worked. The Vegas excess went to the heads of the cast and crew. If Verhoeven and Berkley had reigned things in, if the supporting characters had been better cast, if there were a few script changes to make things more gritty and less like a fairytale it could have all worked. Sadly, that’s not the end product. What we end up with is an over-the-top cult classic that tainted the NC-17 rating forever. What a waste. Still, it’s enjoyable for what it is.0 member like this review.
