  • WHAT I LIKED: What's most striking about Michael Mann's theatrical debut 'Thief' is what an incredibly confident and assured piece of film it really is. The way his beautiful visuals and incredible use of music build such a suffocating, melancholic vibe and such a dreamy sensation when tension is being built makes for something not only very commanding, but also thoroughly impressive - proving why Mann has been able to become one of the most reliable directors in Hollywood today.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: What prevents the film from moving past its surface-level merits is the script, which unfortunately presents the main character in a very unlikeable way. After all, it is a narrative that entirely relies on support for its lead, and without it there's a lot less to engage here than one might hope for.

VERDICT: A film that shows off Mann's talents with sheer filmmaking prowess; 'Thief' is one striking thing, it's just a shame it's not actually that engaging overall.
