  • When I first saw the trailers for Us, I was hyped. I loved Get Out and I think Jordan Peele has such a great vision and his comedy background gives him the ability to layer meaning in ways that many people just don't have. I thought from watching the trailer that this was going to be a commentary on black-on-black crime, playing on the idea that "we are our own worst enemies." But, I was very wrong. It is deeper than that.

Us is so deep that after watching it, I was at first convinced that Peele had taken a break from the social commentary and just created a straightforward horror. It was a good horror movie plain and simple, but the more I thought about the imagery, themes, and some specific lines from the film the more I think it is asking some deep questions that would be spoilers if I just ask them outright. I love all the little touches that Peele brings to the film including a VHS copy of C.H.U.D. which if you know the film it is great foreshadowing for things to come.

This one is definitely a solid sophomore effort from this promising new director and I'm excited to watch this another couple of times to further solidify the meanings that lie just beneath the surface.
