BLACK MANTA AND STARFIRE FROM TITANS ARE A COUPLE IN THIS MOVIE. WHAT?
But then again… Nakia and M'Baku are also a couple in this one,so…
What can be said that has already been said? (Since 2017,again…) Coming from a genuine comedian,Us is the second hit in a row for Writer/Director Jordan Peele, even if that means he’s upping the ante for this one. Big locations, big scope,no more limits for screenwriting, and actors/actresses get the chance to play themselves, but so rigid and over-the-top at the same time. It’s all ambitious and amazing to look at...Maybe a little too ambitious…
There are a lot of comparisons you can make with Get Out,actually. For example the “main character/-s move to a new place, only to find out something’s wrong”,or the insane 3rd Act Plot Twist mumbo jumbo.
The Sound Mix on this thing is also amazing. Being done in Dolby Atmos,it’s predictable, but oh hell,if this is one spacious, dynamic and aggressive mix. For a Horror Movie,at that! Easily going to be a showcase when it comes out on Blu-Ray.
The Doppelgangers part of the movie are a threatening presence without being threatening, but just calm and insane,to the point to where one of the kids is a pet to them. They have a motivation, but it's sort of a weird one.
Oh,and did I mention that the kids in this are really solid? No annoying kids shtick,at last!
The main cast is also great, but that's to be expected from a star-studded cast with Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, who's basically me,but black. I loved him in this movie so much...
But the Screenplay and Story are just great. Not amazing… Like Get Out,it shares the same problem where it's this movie that narrates a pretty good story with an interesting message and some intense sequences, but wait,it's also a Horror,so they'll throw some scary scenes that work on so many levels. (Or maybe I'm not really one for Horror movies…)
And also sometimes, all of a sudden,it's a Marvel Movie. Do you know in those movies where the comedy is also sprinkled in moments where it's not supposed to happen? Well, get ready for a truckload of those in this movie!
The Comedy is,sometimes, all over the place, and while it's super funny,it's kind of distracting from the main picture. And no,I didn't get the 3rd Act villain motivation. That's the part where the Screenplay felt too ambitious. Same thing for the Shyamalan-ific Plot Twist at the end. What was all of that?
Plot twists aside,Us is still a great time at the movies. It's a horror on a grander scale (with $10 Million+) that is really impressive until the 3rd Act.
Definitely go see it,but beware of the plot twists,I think?
