  • A movie based on an action figure is truly a premise that is today considered as lazy. Let's face it. And no matter how bad they are, they're either solid guilty pleasures or just "for the hardcore fans only."

As someone who wasn't playing with action figures, "Max Steel" is totally new to my ears. The movie revolves around Max (Winchell), who lives with an ordinary life with his mother (Bello), until strange things happen to his body. In no time, he was visited by Steel (Brener) a drone-like extraterrestrial who must team up with him to stop an evil force.

Formulaic is the perfect definition of Max Steel. The writer borrows the same path of many superhero movies that has come before. From a basic origin story, to self-doubt, and lastly an action-heavy third act. It also has the same superhero clichés, involving a love interest (Villafane) and the main antagonist (Garcia). Villafane's character is the typical throwaway one, while Garcia's role is the poorly-written type of villain.

Max is the only character to relate with. In terms of casting, Winchell and Bello are the only redeeming figures of this movie, as they try to escape the script they have entered in. Aside from the few stunt sequences, there are some so-so CGI, including a tornado fight scene which lasted for a few seconds.

VERDICT: It takes a visionary to try and build a superhero movie, but what is vision if there is no action. For a movie about action figures, Max Steel is disposable.
