The Shallows is a short and focused story about one woman's fight to survive an attack from a "larger than life" shark. It offers some of the best cinematography of the of the year (no doubt that both the beautiful location and Blake Lively herself added to this), a surprisingly great performance by Lively and some convincing special effects, despite the low budget. It's not quite Jaws or Deep Blue sea, but somewhere in the middle when it comes to the shark itself, which lends to its premise (girl stranded on a rock in eyesight of the shore) excellently when things really start to go down. The movie at times depends on tropes that come along with sharks, beaches, surfing etc, and the trailer showed more than they needed to, but if you're looking for good summer shark fun, check this one out.
