  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Knocked Up,' may just look like a pretty passable excuse for a friday night comedy, but in fact it's a rather smart and often rather hilarious movie that - like many great comedies - delivers some genius commentary on the real world. Yes writer/director Judd Aptow takes his years of experience here and crafts a relatively high-concept comedy narrative that's easy to get on board with and then unlocks some stuff about the real differences and similarities between many men and women in relationships in a way that's expectedly light-hearted but also occasionally rather impactive. What happens of course is that an immature and unambitious Seth Rogan accidentally gets Katherine Heigl pregnant, and it's then both interesting and amusing as we watch the two deal with this - conveniently alongside the established relationship of Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann who share many surprising similarities. The guys both seem to want an easy life whilst the girls don't, but just when you think the film's about to fall into genuine stereotyping beyond the comedic, it becomes clear that really noone's really worlds apart and sometimes it's just about seeing eye to eye. That thematic journey is brilliant, and Aptow delivers it perfectly along with his excellent comedic cast (who also deliver the serious stuff very well) and in the end that makes for a real surprise of a film that's more intelligent - and funnier - than you may think.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Some of the surface humour is still rather crude and occasionally leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
VERDICT: Comedy is a difficult thing to balance, but what Judd Aptow does with 'Knocked Up,' is deftly merge humour and serious themes in one great movie that will undoubtedly exceed expectations. I'd definitely recommend this one, it's an underrated gem.
