  • WHAT I LIKED: The epitome of the classic gangster film, Howard Hawks' 'Scarface: The Shame of a Nation,' is a truly Shakespearean drama all about crime and character with bags of comedy, tragedy and excitement. Yes this really is one of those movies that everyone should watch, not only because it's historically significant, but also because it's a properly engaging film that follows the fascinating rise and fall of one corrupt man in a corrupt world.
Beginning with his appealing plucky charm and the promise of having everything, greed soon overtakes him and we begin to see a spiralling personal downfall as everything gets dragged under with him. We've seen that kind of story adapted many times since, but it's done so brilliantly here, and all with buckets of thematic irony. "The World is Yours,"? Oh this really is the gangster movie of all great gangster movies.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Some moments do feel a little distant from the narrative and overall character journeys as the odd scene was added to appease the censorship growing in Hollywood at the time.
VERDICT: Any film fan should watch this. Not only because it's one of the very pillars upon which this genre stands, but also because it's a properly engaging movie full of tragedy, comedy and excitement.
