  • WHAT I LIKED: Darker, mellowed and less satirically misty-eyed than the original, 'T2: Trainspotting,' takes more time and delves deeper and more seriously into its characters and makes for a different kind of film than the first. Yes rather than an uncomfortably hilarious fast-paced ride, this sequel takes itself a little more seriously which is not only a sign of how Danny Boyle has grown as a filmmaker, but is also a symptom of the fact that these characters are older and more self-aware than when we watched them gleefully wasting their lives away in their 20s. As a result, the overall experience is in a way a story of age and is certainly slightly more somber, but that doesn't mean it's lost its appeal as Danny Boyle still packs T2 with amusing commentaries on modern-day Britain and plenty of brilliant editing tricks and snappy humour.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The only issue is that when the film tries to nostalgically recapture the misty-eyed fantasy of what these characters saw twenty years ago, it somewhat takes you out of the more serious narrative and sadly feels like a desperate attempt to appeal to fans of the original when the story itself is doing a great (if rather slow) job of moving us on.
VERDICT: A slower, more in-depth film than the first, 'T2: Trainspotting,' definitely shows off the right place to go with the sequel, but does equally take the occasional misstep.
