  • WHAT I LIKED: There's no doubt that 'Thor: The Dark World' does contain some nuggets of greatness that are enough to keep you there without nodding off, and most of those - perhaps unsurprisingly - come from the times when Thor interacts with Loki. Yes Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston's on-screen chemistry here is extremely captivating, and in a way it embodies every glimmer of goodness in the film - some attempt at emotion, a whiff of mysticism, and an underlying whit to keep things ticking over.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Sadly none of that is enough to overcome the overwhelming dullness on display as most of the film's minutes are spent involving us in dull battles or horribly boring exposition. Equally within all of that there's very little sense that the film is trying to say anything - it's more so churning through the motions of its story like a checklist with a terribly minute regard for proper character arcs or building investment and tension, let alone dealing with any themes of its own. That's an occasionally forgiveable trait for a big blockbuster, and even if there are some nuggets of greatness here, the film doesn't even pack the style or fun action that one might expect to distract from the sole-less standard of everything else.
VERDICT: There's some Marvel magic shining through here, but sadly 'Thor: The Dark World' winds up a very formulaic and unexciting sequel indeed.
