  • WHAT I LIKED: With its wit, charm and character focus, 'Lolita,' is easily one of Kubrick's best works as it seems less concerned with abstract representation and more concerned with creating a playful, engaging and interesting narrative from its infamous source material. Yes rather than the usual visual messages, metaphors and representations, what we get is a film that shows off Kubrick's usual melodramatic style in a way that one can enjoy rather than dissect. This means the talents of this director can be better appreciated, and the overall experience is enjoyable and managed to bring up some interesting ideas as you watch. In other words, it's a more standard piece of filmmaking, and it's arguably all the better for it.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There's no doubt that it's also massively overlong.
VERDICT: A charming, funny and enjoyable film, 'Lolita,' shows what Kubrick can do when he focuses on building character and narrative in more conventional and engaging way. This is definitely one of his best.
