  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Enola Holmes,' follows Sherlock's younger sister escaping from her brothers' clutches to solve a mystery of her own after her mother suddenly picks up and leaves. It's a fun little story (adapted well by Jack Thorne) about a fiercely independent girl in the shadows of her famous family going and making it for herself, and that's brought to life brilliantly because on the one hand it's directed with real Sherlock-y aplomb by 'Fleabag's Harry Bradbeer, and on the other hand it's just got such a lively cast.
Millie Bobby Brown is very captivating as Enola - an energetic and highly intelligent young woman who is determined to outsmart and out-manouvre everyone in her quest to find her mother, and Henry Cavill is the perfect Sherlock - a character who here is torn between the societal expectations of his sister, and his pride in her unique abilities. The dynamics between them and Enola's interactions with the rather backward Victorian public are always engaging and highly amusing, and that fits well with Bradbeer's snappy cuts and brisk camerawork. All of that - along with the continued mystery of the plot - will keep your eyes on the screen throughout, and it makes for a great family film to escape with in these turbulent times.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's not going to be troubling the tear ducts, the heart strings or the brain cells too much - even if some substance is brought by the throughline about women standing up for their rights.

VERDICT: 'Enola Holmes,' is a snappy and funny film about Sherlock's fierce younger sister fighting for her independence which will keep you engaged from start to finish.
