Bølgen, also known as The Wave, is a Norwegian film about a small mountain village that is at risk of being demolished by a tsunami wave triggered from avalanches in the area. The first half of the movie is pretty much dedicated to character development and exploring the technology side of what is being done to prevent the disaster. I felt the film did a decent job of establishing the characters and making you care for them. The acting was good, and I felt a lot of the emotion that these characters were experiencing in myself. While the primary disaster event only lasts about 10 - 15 minutes, it was incredibly intense and shot very well with high-quality special effects.

Overall, I very much enjoyed Bølgen and found it to be on par with, if not better than, many of the other disaster films that are out there. Bølgen was a subtitled film for me, and one of the struggles I commonly have with subtitled action films is that you miss a lot of the details because you are reading the subtitles. I am happy to report that that is not the case with this film. The subtitles are incredibly easy to read and do not get in the way of enjoying the movie. I only have one very minor issue with this film. After the wave hits the town, I found it hard to gauge time. I struggled to measure how long people were trapped in difficult situations or how long it took someone to navigate the disaster zone and get somewhere. I feel it is important to properly convey accurate timeframes when you are supposed to be relating to people who are suffering in tough situations. I give Bølgen (The Wave) a 7 out of 10.
