  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Die Hard,' is a simple, high-concept action movie in which you know the outcome from the first moment, but can't wait to see how you get there. It follows New York Cop John McLane (Bruce Willis) visiting his somewhat estranged wife at her work Christmas party, but things quickly go awry when a group of terrorists hijack their tower and hold them all hostage demanding money. You know from John's taxi ride there that something's going to happen because, well, he's a cop, he's Bruce Willis, and there's lots of ominous music, and you also know he's going to save the day, take down the terrorists, probably lose his shirt and the process, and his wife is going to fall back in love with him. That's exactly what happens, and it's executed well with lots of decent atmospheric tension and brilliantly hammy overacting. What's not to love?

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's hardly Citizen Kane.

VERDICT: It would feel like an insult to summarise 'Die Hard,' with anything other than a cliche. It's exactly what it says on the tin.
