Two Lovers and a Bear (2016) is set in a small town near the North Pole; the story follows Roman (Dane DeHaan) and Lucy (Tatiana Maslany), two burning souls who come together to make a leap for life and inner peace.

I was drawn to "Two Lovers and a Bear" after hearing buzz about it from a couple of different festival showings. While I didn't love it, I also didn't hate it. It has a couple of redeeming qualities with an excellent setting and decent performances. But throughout the film, I just kept thinking to myself, man this a weird and dull movie.

I don't want to spoil too much, so I can't flat out say what one of my biggest issues was with the film, but I will say I had a problem with a particular ability that DeHaan's character had. It was just strange and almost laughable. You probably know what I am talking about if you have seen the film.

One of my other big issues with the movie is related to a very inconsistent tone. The film jumps between a quiet cold and alone tone, a tense almost thriller-like tone, and at one point a strange horror/action tone. It is just all over the place.

Overall, "Two Lovers and a Bear" is a very strange and messy movie. The story and the tone are all over the place, and certain aspects of the film were almost laughable. I did enjoy the arctic setting and the performances, but unfortunately, those were not enough for a positive rating. I give Two Lovers and a Bear (2016) a 4 out of 10.
