It's fun, gory but not too gory and imaginative. Pitch Black works as a sci-fi adventure horror. While its surface level is rich in interest, underneath the cogs and gears are the same as in any other survival horror. A charismatic male lead, the one who disagrees with everything, a child, a religious figure, a badass female second in command, and a nerd; not including the obligatory monster fodder nobodies.
Saying that the structure is comforting. I could easily rewatch this movie a thousand times. It works the same way as a really good episode of Doctor Who does. In fact, in every way, aside from Vin Diesel, this film is a really long Doctor Who episode. And that is never a bad thing.
