Paul Thomas Anderson is a director who never patronises his audience. He always places his viewers on a pedastal as he believes they are deserving of being there.

The same is said here. We are invited to watch two greedy, self-centred lovers clash while still falling in love. PTA never ones attempts to explain their reasonings but let's the audience keep up, asking us to pull our own explanations for the force pulling these selfish companions.

The film itself is beautiful and enchanting. You can feel the marble on your feet and the constant light pouring through immense Georgian windows.

While the ending does drag, it's impossible to stop watching the couple constrict and suffocate each other, ending in submission, to an extent.
