I went into Prisoners knowing nothing of it. It was recommended to me from a friend who told me to go in cold. So I did. And my god, what a fucking astounding film. The director is Denis Villineuve, who is a god damn mastermind, and this film is undoubtedly my favorite of his. He KNOWS how to build tension. The cast is amazing, the standouts obviously being Hugh Jackman as the father of one of the little girls who goes missing, who nails his emotional scenes everytime, and Jake Gyllenhaal, the detective working on the case, who gives an excellent performance, and who added some ticks to make his character feel much more grounded. The characters also all act natural, the way real people would. The plot is very complex and filled with twists and turns, not only that, but the twists feel deserved and built up. The little hints toward the greater story are sprinkled throughout the film, so it's best to pay close attention to pick them up. The cinematography by Roger Deakins is, as always, fucking phenomenal. The score by Jóhan Jóhansson is tremendous. I applaud the movie for its editing. It knows when to cut scenes, and when to put the score in the background and when to keep it silent. And the last few scenes. Holy shit. Prisoners is definitely one of my favorite films ever made, and that's why I give it a 10/10.
