  • WHAT I LIKED: How do you introduce multiple fantasy characters in one movie, who's relationships and experiences all feel real? Well Bryan Singer seems to know how, and that's what makes 'X-Men' such a big success. Yes thanks to his direction and a great script, your connection to each mutant is established expertly from the outset, to the point where you're so engaged with Wolverine and his associates that there's the opportunity to get rather emotional seeing them tested in the way they are here. They really are tested too, as this film not only places these guys in difficult situations, but it also plants the seeds of the social pressures they'll encounter later in the franchise.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Whilst the characters are served beautifully, the actual plot is fairly poor and confusing, as are some of the gimicky sets, action pieces and special effects
VERDICT: A sensetive and character driven superhero movie that begins a franchise (and arguably a genre) in one hell of a brilliant way.
