  • WHAT I LIKED: It's hardly surprising given that Borat's Dan Mazer is at the helm and that Steve Merchant is in a key role that some of the humour in 'I give it a year,' is rather amusing with plenty of vulgar and crass laughs to counteract the soppy centre.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The issue is that the soppy centre is so weak and so it feels more like a collection of comedic sketches than any sort of engaging film. Yes if Mazer thought that Richard Curtis' 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' was as easy to put together as it looked, he was most definitely fooled, as the only reason you're on board with the jokes there is that Curtis manages to build characters you genuinely care about no matter how quaint and little-England they are. Here, you're instead left with a couple you care very little about as they're massively underwritten and not that well portrayed either. In the end, Mazer tried a British rom-com, but the lack of good rom means the result is very underwhelming, and the com doesn't land so well either.
VERDICT: No matter how hard this film tries, it just can't recapture the magic of what Richard Curtis can do, and that's all down to how little you care about any of the characters. What a disengaging experience this is.
