  • WHAT I LIKED: What's most striking about 'Deadpool 2,' is that it's a film that largely takes itself far more seriously than the first, and that does certainly have its benefits. Yes this time around lots of space is given to building a better story about family with some character meaning and heart, and that not only furthers Deadpool's journey and brings opportunities to develop some good side characters, it also makes this a largely viable sequel that doesn't feel like it's just relying on rehashing what people supposedly liked before. That overall sense is also helped by the visual style as the higher budget and David Leitch's stylistic influence is definitely felt throughout.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Having said that, the fact it all takes itself more seriously means the largely unfunny jokes become very irritating indeed, and the stupidity and poorly-written script shines rather brightly. Oh, and that's definitely not helped by the fact that Ryan Reynolds - who easily carried the first film - gets a whole lot less focus than he did before.
VERDICT: A viable sequel that takes itself more seriously, 'Deadpool 2,' may have a slightly more interesting story than its predecessor, but it's also miles less appealing overall.
