  • WHAT I LIKED: What keeps you invested throughout 'One Day,' is undoubtedly the delightful chemistry between its two leads as Anne Hathaway delivers a brilliant performance alongside Jim Sturgess. Couple that with the melodramatic chic of its settings, style and a somewhat poetic journey and you get a romance where elements certainly work and you care about the characters.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The big issue though is that the build-up is naturally (and intentionally) frustrating as the pair struggle to get together, but the eventual payoff is the biggest let-down imaginable. Yes it's been said the fact that it subverts expectations and undermines some genre tropes is clever, but when that's just done for the sake of it with nothing meaningful behind the final decisions, it's just unbearably exasperating. Now of course the annoyance felt here at least proves how much the film has made you care, but it does just as good a job of taking that investment away as it does of building it.
VERDICT: 'One Day,' has some very charming chemistry at its centre, but undermining expectations for the sake of it doesn't make an intelligent romance story. In fact here, it just makes for a very, very frustrating one.
