  • WHAT I LIKED: Where 'The Purge: Anarchy,' improves over its predecessor is that it takes place on the streets of a city downtown so the film is able to cover wider political ground and create a more all-consuming atmosphere of chaos and fear. Yes by showing the state of the streets that were only hinted at in the previous movie, you're now able to see the full affects of an idea like the purge - from the way that the poor are targeted, to the mysterious introduction of an even more sinister establishment force. This overall sense of horror is magnified by an improved production in many areas, and the way the character narrative unfolds and comes together is also rather intriguing as it pushes together a group of very different unrelated people with one rogue badass (brilliant played by a Frank Grillo undoubtedly deserving of more screen time) at the centre. All of this makes for a few tense moments and some interesting and amusing - if rather overt - political commentary, and overall the whole thing winds up a fairly successful sequel that will have you thoroughly engaged and entertained from start to finish.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The characters themselves aren't necessarily developed with enough panache to make them overly investing, and the plot serves more as a vehicle for exploring the streets before the character motives are revealed, and as a fairly clichéd and predicable affair afterwards.
VERDICT: An improvement on its predecessor in terms of thematic and production scope, 'The Purge: Anarchy,' takes the franchise's central idea to the streets, and winds up a better (if equally heavy-handed) film for it.
