  • It’s difficult to make a movie where we know what will turn out in the end. Christine, in this case, is the biopic of Christine Chubbuck, a news reporter who committed a shocking, tragic suicide on live TV which is considered to be one of the most disturbing moments that changed the history of media. So the question is, why did she shoot herself? The rest of “Christine” is set on the final weeks of Chubbuck's life and shows the different details of how she faced her personal, unhappy life with her mother, co-workers and love interest.

There are scenes in the movie, where we could feel the depression and tragedy within Christine’s character. Christine, played by Rebecca Hall, is the titular character of this psychological drama slash dark comedy, a TV reporter stressed to the breaking point by determination and self-criticism. Speaking of her, Hall gives the best performance in her career, thus far. She definitely embodies Chubbuck with a plenty amount of gravitas and empathy – we feel her struggles, her ambitions, and most importantly, her emotions – thus, we understand the complex nature of her character.

Most importantly, director Antonio Campos satirizes subjects in mass media with the help of 70s retro vibe from its interiors to the music and setting.

VERDICT: With his talented ensemble cast and Hall’s breakthrough performance, Campos has turned a shocking, tragic biopic into a pathetic and unnerving character study.
