  • Chronicle is one of those movies that you may not love, but you have to admit it's cleverness. At least, that's how I thought of it. Chronicle follows three boys as they discover an incredible object that gives them powers of flight and telekinesis. It's a darker take on a superhero movie, and if you think my description sounds vague, there is literally no other way to put it because they never explain how this object enhances them. Dane DeHaan stars as the lead, playing essentially the exact same character he played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2: an antisocial high schooler with an abusive father who, is eventually consumed by his inner demons and flies around the city, wreaking havoc, facing off against his former best friend, and killing dozens of people. I know that sounds pretty harsh to compare anything to The Amazing Spider Man 2, but if you've seen both movies you know exactly what I'm talking about. Except, in this movie, the performance is appropriate and quite convincing. Chronicle is a film that would've been amazing if granted an R rating, because it has such brutal themes and violence. It could be taken to the next level with a little more lenience from the MPAA. Still, it juggles all of its topics, and there's a really definite switch in the movie's tone at about the halfway mark. Since this is a sci fi movie, good CGI is always an element you have to watch out for, and this films was tolerable. It had its better moments but it was nothing outstanding. Michael B. Jordan is here, and was probably the highlight of the whole film because he is such a charismatic actor! And then he's gone before the final showdown which is disappointing. The character motivations were unoriginal, but the climax and final battle were done well and ended on a Batman vs. Superman note, which might split the viewers, but I liked it. The ending was eh. It was supposed to be heartwarming, but I raised my eyebrows and muttered, "really?" I'm being rather negative, because this is a well rounded film, I just have several personal issues with the movie. Good, not my favorite.
