  • WHAT I LIKED: Ben Affleck's directorial debut 'Gone Baby Gone,' is a well-constructed thriller with a great twisty plot and an unusual and interesting moral question surrounding its conclusion. What's most notable however is that that's only made successful by Affleck's direction as he brings this difficult area of Boston to life really well and unravels the plot perfectly to keep us in the know and surprised by the twists in equal measure. Couple that with a few engaging suspenseful sequences and some convincing supporting performances and what you've got is a great thriller and a very promising directional debut overall.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's not as investing as it could have been because there aren't really any characters that you particularly care about. That's actually a problem with much of Affleck's subsequent work behind the camera as he rarely gives much time to develop them, but it's certainly not helped here by a fairly lackluster performance from Casey Affleck who fails to properly peg the character he's playing.
VERDICT: A thriller with a great plot that's brought to life very well by Ben Affleck, 'Gone Baby Gone,' is a promising directorial debut, but it's sadly lacking in the character department.
