The Farewell had big shoes to fill in being the first indie film I’d seen in theaters since Eighth Grade, but it was more than up to the task, thrashing my expectations while delivering one of the most genuine and heartfelt movies of the year. The Farewell is a semi-autobiographical film, and Lulu Wang’s soul is manifested on the screen with every picture that moves; the personal story of spending time with a loved one before they die is one that is hard not to make saccharine or manipulative, but Wang grounds it in a story about tradition, culture, and the difference between Eastern and Western sensibilities. The movie hit home to me as a tale about a member of the diaspora, and the struggles the main character goes through as a result, and the way Lulu Wang presents her story to you, its nearly impossible to not have some sort of emotional reaction to this expertly told story.
