  • WHAT I LIKED: Now I have to preface this by saying I'm entirely unfamiliar with any of this film's source material, but what we clearly got here was less so a horror pic, and more so an adventure movie with a few horror sketches sprinkled throughout. Luckily then, certainly where it works best is in that charming adventure department, as the times spent seeing these kids on their journey are by far the most engaging and enjoyable parts. Indeed the chemistry and surprising level of humour exchanged between these brilliantly portrayed young leads brings a level of sparky whit and Spielberg-esque charm that one may not have necessarily expected.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Sadly though where the film lets itself down is in the horror department as all the sketches that lead up to the final act largely feel rather forced and unnecessary. For me this boils down to the fact that Pennyswise and all the in-your-face jump-scares and violence are massively over-exposed before the final act, which means that any chance of building subtle tension is lost and the final act doesn't feel as exciting or scary as it could do with a more tense build-up.

VERDICT: 'IT' has its foundations in a charming and enjoyable adventure, it's just a shame it so poorly shoe-horns its obligatory horror sketches.
