"Based on true events" has become a somehow effective marketing strategy for horror movies, especially after "The Exorcist." Which is one of the reasons why the first "Conjuring" movie was a hit. But considering as the man who is behind the "Saw" and "Insidious" franchise, plus his surprising crime-thriller "Furious 7," James Wan is certainly on the top of the game. And "The Conjuring 2" is a testament to that.
Reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren are Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. In this sequel, a family finds their home tormented by a demonic presence, leading the paranormal investigators to fly to north London in verifying the said case.
With The Conjuring 2, Wan continues to solidify his filmography, specifically in the horror territory. In terms of building and sustaining the suspense, Wan is indeed a master. His scares are well-setup. Before the pay-off, Wan first prepares his audience by making higher stakes to its well-rounded characters. When it comes to its old-school tone, the period detail and eerie shots are perfectly captured.
Moreover, Wilson, Farmiga and the cast inhabit characters that are dynamic and real. The script offers a charming yet empathetic arc to the characters that includes the themes of family, time and marriage, without diminishing the fact that it is still an effective horror film.
VERDICT: The Conjuring 2 is a testament that horror films can go as both scary and sweet. And thanks to Wan, it truly surpasses its predecessor.1 member likes this review.
