  'The Half of It' is a genre renegade of the highest order, submerging its frames in bleak and understated storytelling, all while maintaining all the heart and requisite trappings of the "high-school romance" movie. Alice Wu's maturity on the subject matter is sobering and deftly cerebral, opting to approach love philosophically, rather than physically or even emotionally; the result is a movie that breathes adequately, speaks when it needs to, and always knows where and when to show restraint. Leah Lewis' performance is quite possibly the best performance of the year, and with Alice Wu's wisdom, the two give me high hopes for the future of this often trite and saccharine genre.
