  • WHAT I LIKED: J.A. Bayona's 'The Impossible,' portrays an incredible tale of human triumph against all odds, and whilst that could have easily come off as contrived, this film beautifully negates any potential problems with its brilliant ability to build characters in meaningful and engaging ways. Indeed with the acting chops of Ewan McGregor and the new-found talent of Tom Holland at the disposal of incredibly powerful and touching direction, what you get is a film that puts people you really care about through the most testing situations imaginable to bring many tears to the eyes and cheeks to the edges of seats. This not only puts J.A. Bayona truly on the map as a director to watch; it also pegs Tom Holland as the versatile star he's so clearly destined to be in one of the most impactive and emotional films of the year.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's script is arguably not as delicate as it could be, but when these folks are delivering the lines, you'll barely notice at all.
VERDICT: An emotionally impactive and thoroughly sensitive portrayal of an incredible human tale, J.A. Bayona's 'The Impossible,' winds up a properly powerful and very successful piece of cinema indeed.
