  • WHAT I LIKED: Whilst 'Bruce Almighty,' was a film about using power to aid the important things in life, sequel 'Evan Almighty,' is simply a film about using power to grow a beard, quit your job and build a giant arc. There are certainly some laughs to be had with the concept of a congressman (Steve Carrel) being given such a task by god to save a bunch of people, and the film plays those up to the max with the ever-amusing Steve Carrel at its centre.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The trouble is however that the joke gets old pretty quickly, and with no underlying theme or purpose to the rather strange concept, you're pretty quickly left looking at the screen wondering what the hell is going on. You could argue there's a redemption character arc in the narrative, but that's a stretch given how absurdly everything is played. In the end it lacks any of the heart or thematic intent of the first film and thus winds up being extremely tiresome to sit through.

VERDICT: Losing the character sensibility and thematic drive of its predecessor, 'Evan Almighty,' winds up being a boring, weightless comedy with one joke that it drives right onto the ground.
