  WHAT I LIKED: The most impressive thing about 'Pacific Rim,' is how well it portrays its sense of scale. Of course, a film about a war with giant sea creatures hinges on that, so it's a good job that director Guillermo Del Toro is at the helm making the creatures and their human-piloted robot opponents feel genuinely colossal with a mix of practical and visual effects.
  
  WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The dialogue and characterisation is more clichéd than a James Cameron movie, and the story completely lacks depth or intrigue, so unfortunately it fails to engage beyond the surface level.
  
  VERDICT: For a film about deep-sea creatures, it's ironic that 'Pacific Rim's absorbing visuals can't quite make up for how utterly shallow it is.
