In Morocco, December of 1941, lies Casablanca; a cultural mixing pot where refugees remain in limbo, desperately trying to attain a fabled travel pass to America. In the epicentre of Nazi and Ally tensions lies Rick's, a gin joint owned by our cynical, world-beater protagonist. Here you can see the geography of Casablanca. While Rick is in the centre of the fluctuating town, he has little affect over it. He is an onlooker, something that is morally incorrigible in the reign of the Third Reich. Here is what makes Casablanca so wonderful. Not only is Rick a complicated, human character, but he is completely endearing with Bogart conveying the woes of the everyday man in an extreme situation.

Bergman too plays an important role, that of lost times. Ilsa Lund represents a romantic 30s Paris, a time without war, where heartbeats would never be mistaken for cannon fire.

Casablanca is remains poignant and brilliantly human, never feeling aged as it taps into a part of everyone of us.
