I’ve never left the cinema with such a determination to make a film. Maybe it was the caffeine rush I was experiencing, but the sentiment remains.
Calling my boyfriend on the way out of the screening I said how badly I wanted this. To make a film with big fancy 35mm film cameras that looked like impressionist paintings. Film with exciting, complex female characters which were well written and performed.
I saw the film at a local cinema this Friday with a close friend. The £4 ticket always seems like a good idea until the picture freezes at crucial points and the action film playing next doors tense soundtrack seeps in. Despite these small distractions I was completely hypnotised by the story. I was vaguely familiar with the narrative having started to read the book but this interpretation offered something new and exciting. ‘Little women’ had been approached multiple times now but it is the sort of story that this can be done with. Even when you know what’s coming you are still moved.
The beach scene!!! I have read many reviews of ‘little women’ now where this scene has been highlighted and I completely understand why. There was something ethereal about the while film but it was amplified in this particular scene. I wanted to climb inside the screen and experience it. Every shot felt like a piece of art. The colour was beautiful. A clear but intertwining filter shift that established the difference in timeline wasn’t overbearing.
I am excited to revisit this film as soon as possible ! :)
