  • WHAT I LIKED: The Harry Potter franchise has been building to this moment since its beginning, and what's immediately obvious about the first part of this epic final chapter is undoubtedly how dark it's all become as the cinematography is thoroughly moody, the magical world is falling apart, and most of all the central characters that we've grown to love are tested to their very extremes. Yes this isn't simply a case of show us the villain and have some spectacular battles whilst throwing in some sacrificial darkness; this is a proper step-up where we see Ron, Hermione and Harry's friendships and loyalties put through their paces emotionally like never before, and the result is something genuinely unsettling and moving. All of that comes to a head in a beautifully tragic final act too, and in the end this is the best Potter venture yet as it takes itself very seriously and really steps up the focus on the characters and the emotional gravitas in a meaningful and affecting manor.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The plot is fairly convoluted at this point and all the mystical jargon can be fairly hard to keep track of.
VERDICT: The start of a gratifying franchise finale that fans truly deserve, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,' is a dark and unsettling character study that delivers as a tragic and upsetting beginning of the very end.
